How to Keep Bugs Away From Pool

Swimming pools attract bugs for multiple reasons. Bugs are naturally attracted to water for drinking, reproduction, and hydration. Bugs are attracted to debris and algae that can build up in pools. Algae growth can be caused by an off-chemical balance in the water, so it's a good idea to test and rebalance the water chemistry if you don't see algae but suspect it's present. Leaving lights on all night can also attract bugs. If you do not like bugs in or around your pool then keep on reading to learn how to prevent them from reproducing or coming back.

Pool Cover

One of the best ways to keep insects away from your pool is to invest in a pool cover. Covering your pool between uses will keep the vast majority of bugs and even debris out of your pool. It is also a good idea to have for safety. This pool upgrade is one you’ll be happy to have!

Regular Pool Maintenance

Maintaining the right amount of chlorine in your pool is important to have clean, safe water in the pool. A test kit can help check the pH of your pool. Along with properly balanced water, it is important to keep your pool as clean as possible. Bugs and algae are attracted to all the debris and icky things that can quickly accumulate in your pool if you’re not careful.

Getting Rid Of Algae

Algae is also one of the most common reasons why bugs are even more attracted to your swimming pool. Algae can be a food source for many insects. One of the best pool maintenance is to manually brush your pool walls to prevent algae from growing. You can also buy an algaecide, this is the best option to fully prevent algae from growing.

Landscaping

Overgrown grass, branches, and bushes are a bridge for insects wanting to enter your pool. Overhanging branches can drop leaves, branches, insects, and even nests inside your pool when the wind blows. Changing up your landscape can also help prevent bugs from coming near your pool. Keeping plants a distance away from your pool is beneficial. Plants are also what can help make your pool look pretty and presentable. There are a few plants that can help keep bugs away. For example: red geranium plants help to keep bees away from the area. Combining this plant with lemon grass can help cut down on the number of mosquitoes in your yard.

Water Movement

Most insects like still water because it makes it easier to get a drink, cool down, or reproduce. To keep your water moving, a good pump will keep your water circulating especially if you have it on a timer. Another way is turning on your jets for a couple of minutes throughout the day. One more way that also helps is your automatic pool cleaner. The pool cleaner is moving and the hoses move with it.

Bug Traps / Zappers

Putting outdoor bug traps in your backyard is a simple and easy way to keep mosquitoes, flies, and other flying critters at bay during pool time. A more common outdoor item to have is a bug zapper. When insects enter the bug zapper, it vaporizes them instantly. Swarms of flying insects can fly into it and do not affect the zapper’s output.

Call A Professional

If you are uncomfortable or are not sure exactly what you are doing, it is best to call a professional. There are plenty of companies out there to help with this special need. It is also more beneficial since they have stronger chemicals and more options for keeping the bugs away.
